Breakin’ Convention, the international festival of hip hop dance theatre, took place at Sadler’s Wells Theatre this bank holiday weekend with headliners Vagabond Crew and Clash 66 and a host of leading UK and international dance companies.
Opening its doors to a sold out audience Breakin’ Convention affirmed itself as a true festival of hip hop with a plethora of foyer activities meaning that everyone had something to do and a reason to get involved in the action rather than being an observer (I mean, what do you pay good money for, to stand around?!): People standing by were gently coaxed into freestyle circles to have a go and a digital graffiti wall had children throwing up their name on an electronic canvas much to the envy of every kidult!
With so much to do daily including an unmissable Freestyle Funk Forum improv jam in the studio theatre ahead of the main ...

Breakin’ Convention, the international festival of hip hop dance theatre takes place this weekend from Saturday 5 May until Monday 7 May at Sadler’s Wells Theatre London and features another stellar line up of the best hip hop dance companies from around the world and around the corner.
Breakin’ Convention festival has always had an emphasis on up and coming choreographers, as a platform for future stars. From the cast of Into the Hoods to Street Dance 3D, nearly every street dancer that’s had success on their side has performed at Breakin’ Convention as a rite of passage. And Breakin’ Convention 2012 isn’t short of acts that can scarecly buy a drink at a bar but can still tear up a dance floor.
The youth companies of today have surpassed the simple one-two step choreography of years gone by as well. While in hindsight sticking together a routine wasn’t too difficult, since ...

Who is the beatboxer in the Virgin Media Talent School during Britain’s Got Talent? Don’t we know him from somewhere? Of course – it’s Killa Kela! And he’s starring on ITV1 and ITV2 during each of the ad breaks for the next few weeks

Killa Kela is the star of a series of Virgin Media Talent School ads (or idents to give them their proper name) that take place between the ad breaks on Britain’s Got Talent.
The Virgin Media Talent School ads are part of a series of online video shorts by Virgin Media who are sponsoring the contest where a range of artists and customers talk about their particular talent to the camera, and have also featured dancer Lizzie Gough.

The people that work in high arts are a funny bunch: Every so often someone will create something that they believe the general population, their intended audience as they seek to reach out to transform into regular arts-goers, can’t fathom why they even bothered: Miss Fortune, the first opera to incorporate b-boying (breakdancing) in an opera production at the Royal Opera House falls into that category.

The story of the titular Miss Fortune is about a daughter of wealthy parents who is determined to go it alone in a mysterious city after losing all her wealth when their yacht sinks. With nothing but the clothes on her back she has to make her way through a city inhabited by underclass Soul Mavericks dancers.
Forced to look for work in a factory to make a living, where ever she goes Miss Fortune is always followed by Fate and his Soul Mavericks minions who ...

Its predecessor Streetdance 3D took the box office by storm in 2010, making the most of the popularity of George Sampson, Flawless and Diversity after their recent television successes.
It’s incredible that it’s now been almost two years since Street Dance 3D was released in cinemas. With George Sampson, Flawless and Diversity as headline acts fresh off Britain’s Got Talent it’s also been two years since attitudes changed towards dance acts taking the quick route to fame on TV talent programmes – because these days everyone does it.

Back then Too Much Flavour also had a different editorial attitude towards street dance as the current UK dance scene began to transition into the mainstream, keeping in mind that Street Dance 3D being a UK film would also be responsible for the rest of the nation to decide they too were street dancers and they too would set up their own companies, crews and classes.
Update: Read a review of Street Dance 2 3D!
Some attitudes may never change when it comes to respecting how it was before the media took notice ...

Looking to buy bboy books this Christmas but not quite sure where to start?
Although decent books on bboy culture are hard to come by we’ve created a short list of the best by some of the world’s renowned figures and best documenters of the culture.
From books that dispel breakdance myths (like calling it ‘breakdance’ when you should call it b-boying) to glossy photo collections that place you into the centre of the action in the cypher, plus bgirl-only books and studies on battle technique itself, these are 4 of the best that we know of and would recommend.
Note: This is a list of books about bboy and bgirl culture. If we ever listed books on how to streetdance we reckon it would look like this!

While other female members may have passed through, Roxy, real name Roxy Milliner, has risen through the ranks of the crew’s A-squad and battles worldwide, plus dances with recent Hip Hop International Crew world champions, Plague.
Over the past two years Roxy has been the poster girl for the championships (see our feature on who was on the B-Boy Championships 2010 poster) and features in the official UK B-Boy Championships book, From Bronx to Brixton.
Being the only girl in the grew draws a lot of attention towards her as few UK crews can boast a female that has progressed as far as her within such a short time period. Is she bothered about all that attention or being seen as a role model for b-girls?
