Waack It Up with The London Waacktitioners

In dark studios in the depths of East London and the dingy clubs of the West End, a phenomenon has been steadily gathering momentum.

Back in September, thanks to B-Better, a select motley crew of dancers began sweating and training and ‘werking’ their leggings off, under the tutelage of Kumari Suraj AKA Frankie Douglas of the Imperial House of Waacking, all in the pursuit of a mysterious dance...Thus the Waacktitioners were born!

Waacking began in the 70s on TV’s Soul Train’ alongside other funk styles. Dancers would simply pose to the beat until waacking pioneer Tyrone Proctor began the trend of flinging and rolling his arms to hit the beat, with a cry of “yeah! Waack it out!”

Now waacking has exploded onto the London dance scene in the wake of The Waacktitioners as they pose and waack their way across the city’s dance floors, all over Facebook, onto the stage of Wandsworth Palais for Dancer’s Delight and even out into the street - check out their guerrilla waack attack on the unsuspecting people of Chinatown...

In their mission to spread the word and the love of the dance, The Waacktitioners take over Den & Centro on Sunday 22nd November from 4-8pm with a workshop, a battle showcase and most importantly a good old fashioned jam featuring music from Mr Funk himself, Disco Z (Zulu DJ).

The Waacktitioners’ Princess Ginger said:

“Waacking started in the clubs so we’re taking it back, come and find out what this style is about, let’s waack it out till they kick us out!”

Everyone aged 18+ is welcome, from complete beginners to full blown divas. From Soul Train to Soho - come and be a part of the re-birth.
