Kymberlee Jay - Serious About StreetdanceAt two years young, Funk Physics is a company still in its early years. Since it was founded, director of Funk Physics, Kymberlee Jay hasn’t held back with putting on big shows: Last year’s We-R-One (click here for our report) celebrated their one year anniversary, packing out the Indigo2 with supporters and dancers coming to see the feature line up. Then, following Michael Jackson’s untimely death in June, she pulled off a tribute show, Come Together, on a similar scale in just five weeks.

Serious About Streetdance will take the success of We-R-One, with another variety of street dance acts and musical numbers to unite and inspire.

This year’s vast dance lineup includes acts who have appeared in shows Kymberlee Jay has hosted, including Dey Dey, Stylefest winner and UK B-Boy world champion popper 2009, Birdgang’s Ivan Blackstock performing bespoke choreography, Prototype, who appeared at B.Supreme, and this year’s Dare2Dance winners, Retaliation Girls.

“I hope this event will inspire

people to dream BIG.”

Kymberlee Jay

Although the names are big, the Funk Physics ethic remains the same as ever:

“The focus is definitely on going against the grain and achieving goals by overcoming obstacles regardless of being told you can’t,” said Kymberlee, referring to the difficulties she faced trying to break the industry in her early career: the whole reason she founded Funk Physics was to allow other dancers to have the same opportunities she was given, even if they didn’t come from a classical dance training background.

She continued: “I hope that this event will inspire people to be goal driven and to dream BIG.”

Street dance gets serious

Since last year the street dance scene has changed, and it seems since the grand prize on Britain’s Got Talent went to a street dancing act for the second year in a row that street dance is forgetting its origins.

Thanks to increased media coverage street dance has achieved the recognition the community has strived to get, while at the same time flooded the market with hundreds of people that believe if they dress the part they can act the part. Rather than pushing the style forward, those motivated only by the money and attention end up misguiding others.

Serious About Streetdance is another huge dance celebration – featuring all the dance companies who are serious about developing and showcasing their art,” said Kymberlee Jay, “I also hope to encourage dancers to think about the roots of street dance and study into it’s history, as opposed to looking for the instant fame that all the televised shows are attracting.”

Street dance gets big

Will Serious About Streetdance be as packed as last year?We-R-One was in attendance of just under 1,900 people; for Serious About Streetdance the upstairs section of the Indigo2 will be opened up to use the full capacity of the venue, allowing for standing and seated tickets.

“It will be on a bigger scale as we have double the number of performances.”

At time of publishing only 77 seated tickets remained.

After the show the event will turn into an after party for dancers to meet, greet and battle one another. DJs on the night include DJ Excalibah, DJ Longers, DJ Mada and DJ Slipa playing the best in hip hop, R&B, house, electro, funk, dancehall, breakbeat, pop, alternative and more until 3am.

A reminder of street dance’s origins

‘Street dance’ gained its title from the street – the location where many of the techniques originated. It is the umbrella term for dance styles that were developed in an outdoor inner-city environment (as oppose to in the indoor studios where many classical and contemporary styles were studied) by many disengaged young people in the late 1970s.

Street dance styles include hip hop b-boying), funk styles (popping and locking) as well as routine choreography of an ‘urban’ nature, which now includes elements of gymnastics.

Street dance is now the most prolific dance style in the UK, with a huge industry following. Forms of street dance styles can be seen in most music videos and backing major label music artists across the globe.
