“The popularity of street dance is undoubtedly on the rise,” director Anthony Van Laast says. No doubt. “A show like Blaze provides the opportunity for a growing fan base to witness a cast of outstanding street dance performers live on stage.”
The thing that makes Blaze stand out is that although it looks like a commercial street dance production, they’ve secured a cast of very reputable dancers for it, including international competition competitors and dancers from some of the best street dance groups in the world.
In the cast from the UK are dancers like Quails (Birdgang), B-
To broaden its appeal and give the show a unique look, the set has been designed
by Es Devlin, set designer for Mika, Pet Shop Boys and Lady Gaga. Paired with the
costume it’s looking to resemble more of a Kanye West video than a street dance show.
Anthony Van Laast says: “I am collaborating with some of the most exciting designers, DJs and choreographers in the world to create a show which will be quite different from the norm, and which I hope will introduce a new audience to dance.”
Unlike past street dance shows that have made it to London’s West End (Into The Hoods, Pied Piper, Insane In The Brain), Blaze isn’t based on a classical story, making it entirely original and all about the dancing.
Once Blaze has finished its run in London, the European tour will open in Amsterdam on 1 April 2010.
Throughout the production of Blaze a video podcast has been produced keeping a diary from auditions through to rehearsals.
